Running "strace -f -ff -o footrace /usr/bin/foomatic-ppdfile list" continues to run but produces no further trace output after: Running "foomatic-ppdfile list" directly uses 100% cpu, except it does not seem to have any internal time-out mechanism, and will run indefinitely. Simply removing foomatic-ppdfile from /usr/bin/, and leaving the rest of the foomatic-db-engine package in place, allows "lpinfo -m" to run normally. What causes lpinfo to call foomatic-ppdfile? I haven't figured that out yet. "lpinfo -m" runs normally with the foomatic-db-engine package removed. foomatic-ppdfile is owned by the foomatic-db-engine package, which is only a dependency of hplip, and could otherwise be removed. ![]() "/usr/lib/cups/driver/foomatic" is just a link to "/usr/bin/foomatic-ppdfile", which is the actual perl script. lpinfo somehow runs "/usr/bin/perl /usr/lib/cups/driver/foomatic list", which then uses 100% cpu. I'm using "lpinfo -m", since that is most direct. My impression is that this is an Arch specific issue, since all of the error reports I found were from people running Arch or some Arch derivative. Apparently, foomatic-db-engine and gutenprint do not play nicely together, from CUPS point of view, but ultimately, it is CUPS that fails. Alternatively, removing gutenprint is a work-around for this error, but then, no gutenprint.įrom searching, this problem seems to have been around since at least 2012. Some people have resolved this by removing foomatic-db and foomatic-db-engine, but these packages are required by hplip, which provides the recommended driver for the printer. Change.ĬUPS server error - There was an error during the CUPS operation: 'Success'. Printer -> Properties -> Settings -> Make and Model.
